On this tour, we will show you a little of Celorico de Basto’s precious heritage.

Let’s start with the greatest icon of the parish of Veade-Peneireiros, the famous Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Veade. Built-in the first half of the 13th century, it still preserves two beautiful side doors from that period. The interior is equally remarkable, although there is little left of the original construction, where artistic and architectural elements from the 1732 rebuilding stand out, including the majestic main altarpiece, full of national Baroque or Joanine motifs.

Next, we will visit what is perhaps the most paradigmatic of the famous gardens in the Terras de Basto: the magnificent camellia garden of the Casa do Campo (Molares, Celorico de Basto). Be amazed by this stunning example of baroque period topiary art, with its arches and corridors, its elegant and refined “casas de fresco”, and meet the unique “Centenária” that actually is over 250 years old, being the oldest cameleia tree in Portugal.
