The history of Quinta do Carmo begins in the 17th century, a property also known as Herdade das Carvalhas. The Quinta was built by King D. João IV for one of the ladies of his court, having as its main objective the production of wine, olive oil, cork and cattle breeding. It was in the late 1980’s, that the joint-venture between Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal and Lafite Rothschild family, a French family internationally known for the production of wines of excellence, began, thus creating a time of expansion at national and international level of the wines and brand Quinta do Carmo.

In 2008, the Bacalhôa wine group acquired Quinta do Carmo, with the departure of the Lafite family, investing in the renovation and expansion of the winery, replanting the vineyards and centralizing the production of the group’s Alentejo wines.

In 2015 the construction of the Magic Mountains Garden began. It is Comendador José Berardo’s wish, to combine contemporary art with the Alentejo cork oak forest using the famous marble of Estremoz.
The 23 mountains that make up this garden, whose size varies between 2 and 10 metres in height, are made of marble stone from the region and painted in different colours, contrasting with the Alentejo cork oak forest being visible from Serra d’Ossa!
