Celebrating a one-of-a-kind product with nearly 600 years of history
The Wine Festival (Festa do Vinho) is one of Madeira’s tourist attractions and pays tribute to the precious nectar and its undeniable socio-economic significance. This invitation to the Festival that celebrates Wine always takes place at the end of August and beginning of September, the time for harvesting the grapes – an activity that is part of the programme of this event and provides you with the opportunity to experience, up close, this important socio-economic aspect of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
An event that kicks off in Funchal with theme-related decorations; exhibitions; live wine-related scenes that recreate its labours; light music shows; world music; choral singing; jazz; traditional music and philharmonic music.
The festival spreads all the way to Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, where the practical side of the agricultural activity is concentrated and where the main ethnographic parade dedicated to grapes and wine takes place.
As part of the grape harvest festivities and by promoting a series of recreational initiatives, Quinta do Furão offers its guests and the general public the opportunity to participate in the traditional live grape harvest, from the picking to the treading of the grapes, thus enabling a realistic and up-close experience. At the end of the harvest all those involved are treated to a buffet inspired by the island’s typical cuisine, which obviously includes a wine-tasting session.
Quinta do Furão is located on a cliff top with fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the North East coast of the island, a great option when visiting Madeira Island. It belongs to the municipality of Santana, a place where customs and traditions are ever present in the local community’s daily life, as well as its pristine and unique natural environment.
